What do you expect about the Netflix anime being developed? Posted: 15 Oct 2020 06:09 PM PDT I've been watching the old anime for the 10googol time and now I started to think about the new anime series that is being developed. There are so many things that could be part of the plot, Sparda's past and his origins. Vergil's time in Fortuna city and so on. I know that the anime wasn't oficially been announced, but I'm already hyped since the producer did a fantastic job with Castlevania. [link] [comments] | ||

The Sons of Sparda & Their Swords Posted: 15 Oct 2020 06:41 AM PDT Recently, I've been thinking about the storytelling/narrative connection between Sparda's twin sons and the heirloom swords they inherited from Sparda. TL;DR I noticed that each keepsake sword accurately summarized the early life, journey and character development of the corresponding son of Sparda. And ironically, each sword also served as the greatest challenge and test that each son had to overcome in order to unlock their full potential and inherit Sparda's mantle as humanity's protector. My theory is that Sparda deliberately picked the right sword for the appropriate son of his. Sparda Sparda likely knew right from the start that Yamato can divide things while Rebellion can unite things, and that this applies even to his sons' human halves and demonic halves. My theory is that back when the twins were still young boys, Sparda had some sort of premonition about their futures. Or perhaps he knew their personalities so well, he could predict which paths in life they'd choose to pursue as they grew up. Equipped with this knowledge, Sparda made preparations by deliberately picking the right sword to give to each son. Yamato was given to Vergil and Rebellion to Dante, rather than the other way round. In addition, the Sword of Sparda was meant for Dante once the right time has come. It wasn't until DMC5 that (I believe) the twins finally understood their father's intentions behind such an arrangement and the meaning of it all. Eva While they were still young, the twins lost their mother to an assault by demon hordes. Needless to say, this incident shaped their early life significantly. The major difference though was that from Vergil's POV it seemed as if his mother and brother abandoned him, leaving him with no choice but to become stronger on his own and fight for his own survival, whereas Dante witnessed his mother courageously protected him and died while she was on her way to protect Vergil. This difference, combined with the personalities of the twins, resulted in Vergil and Dante developing contrasting (polar opposite) coping mechanisms and philosophies on how to live their lives as they grew up. Vergil Let's examine Vergil and Yamato first. As a result of the aforementioned tragic incident, Vergil's one and only fear deep down in his heart is the feeling of abandonment, powerlessness and helplessness that humans often feel in the face of demon invasions. Furthermore, one key thing about Vergil's character is that he isn't comfortable revealing or facing his emotional vulnerabilities head-on, preferring to repress those and put up a tough, indifferent façade instead. So his coping mechanism (and MOTIVATION!) was to try repress and evade this fear. How? By seeking more power and becoming stronger so that nobody can ever terrify him, harm him or control his fate again. Since Vergil thought his human mother was powerless and cowardice while his demon father was incredibly powerful and heroic, he shunned his "weak" humanity and embraced his powerful demonic (specifically Sparda's) heritage in his quest for power. If you check out Yamato's Japanese name (閻魔刀) on the wiki (https://devilmaycry.fandom.com/wiki/Yamato), you'll find that the name "Yamato" perfectly describes Vergil's demon-like lust for power in his early days. :
A couple more observations regarding Yamato. The fact that Yamato has a scabbard represents how Sparda believed that one should learn to keep one's inner darkness in check by holding onto one's humanity, although Vergil didn't understand this at first. Yamato being shattered by Mundus signifies how Vergil's belief about power and his quest will eventually lead him to doom. Guess who restored Yamato afterwards? Nero - Vergil's son and a living reminder of Vergil's repressed humanity. However, Vergil didn't know that he has a son until the climax of DMC5. Vergil's belief that "might solves everything" and his quest for power went on pretty smoothly until a point where it became his bottleneck and undoing. He begain to suffer a series of defeat under the hands of Dante, Mundus and others. Then he ended up on the verge of death while facing a serious bottleneck in his pursuit. Still unable to see where he had gone wrong, Vergil resorted to stabbing himself with Yamato to split his human and demonic halves. He likely thought that by doing so, he could cast away his crumbling body and attain new heights in power. The result of this splitting was unexpected and surprising to Vergil. Vergil (as in, his consciousness and memories) now finds himself turned into a fragile, powerless V while his power and inner darkness went to Urizen. What is the meaning of this? It turns out that the legacy that Sparda passed on specifically to Vergil is both a challenge to overcome and a lesson to be learned regarding true power and human potential. Vergil/V had to relive his worst fear (powerlessness and helplessness), find a different way to overcome (not "evade") that fear by embracing what it means to be human (which includes helping others, relying upon others for help, the resolve to protect someone, diligent training, resourcefulness and skills), and also observe Dante and Urizen to see for himself who's stronger and who's right in the end. All these serve to help V(ergil) appreciate human nature more and teach him the vital lesson that ultimate power comes from combining the good aspects of both demonic nature and human nature. Already since his birth, Vergil had access to both natures, hence Sparda essentially wanted to teach Vergil to accept himself for who he is, embrace both natures equally, combine them to great effects and turn that into his major strength. By learning what it means to be human and with help from others, V successfully survived long enough and fused with Urizen, restoring Vergil in the process. Now, Vergil must have realized the real purpose of him receiving Yamato from his father. He gained new understanding of true power by discovering how human resolve contributes to one's full power (Nero is a living example of this). Mirroring how Sparda acquired an appreciation towards human nature, Vergil began to accept his humanity thanks to his time as V, partial closure that comes from Dante explaining the truth of what happened to their mother, and Nero showing up and acknowledging Vergil as father. All these things together propel him to the zenith of his power (although I don't know whether Sparda foresaw Vergil consuming a Qliphoth fruit). Both Sparda and Vergil went through the process of obtaining ultimate power, and then developing a desire to live normal human lives free from a non-stop, mindless obsession over power. (Ironically, despite its demonic-sounding name, Yamato was what Sparda used to separate himself from his demonic past so that Sparda could live a normal human life.) I believe Vergil also came to appreciate Sparda's reasons for keeping the demon world separated from the human world. Therefore, Vergil now acts as Sparda's appointed heir and responsible safekeeper of Yamato, which is the key to keeping both worlds separated. Vergil will now live to keep Yamato safe and away from anyone who wants to steal it, obtain ultimate power and/or endanger the human world by un-separating both worlds, all while enjoying the company of his brother and son. Dante Now onto Dante and Rebellion (read on to see how Sword of Sparda also comes to play here). If Vergil's psychological issue was his repressed fear of human helplessness (plus mommy issues?), then Dante's issue was his self-loathing, non-acceptance and avoidance towards his demonic side from Sparda (plus daddy issues?). On one hand, seeing his mother's brave self-sacrifice made Dante into a person who respects, values and identifies with humanity and his humane side. Hence, seeking and protecting his loved ones (whether family or friends) from demons became his sole motivation, reason and resolve for fighting and growing stronger. On the other hand, Dante has a different attitude towards his demonic side which he inherited from Sparda. Dante blames and resents demons (and his father too) for the loss of his family. He didn't take kindly to the baggage and burden that comes with being a son of Sparda. Most demons hate him and view him as a disgraceful traitor, while (in his early days) some humans feared and ostracized him. Another important thing to take note is that unlike Vergil who's ambitious (Vergil aimed to surpass Sparda) and MOTIVATED to get stronger, Dante is by nature laid-back, thrill-seeking and relatively unambitious. Dante has never been too keen to have his life be defined by or compared to the legendary Sparda, whose greatness is no doubt very challenging to live up to. Dante likely also struggled to put himself in Sparda's shoes and appreciate Sparda's reasons for going all the way to perform all those deeds that people remembered him for. So the name of Dante's keepsake sword, Rebellion, symbolizes how Dante started out rejecting and avoid confronting his heritage as Sparda's son and all of Sparda's legacy. Dante's humane motivation and reason for fighting served him well and led him to victory on some occasions, but other times it proved to be insufficient because humans have physical limits, after all. On three such occasions (DMC1,3,5), Sparda's legacy to Dante (in the form of Rebellion and Sword of Sparda) presented itself to Dante, and Dante was forced to confront his demonic heritage from Sparda. Out of those three instances, on two occasions (DMC3,5) Dante ended up permanently unlocking more of his dormant demonic potential for future battles. The first occasion involved Vergil impaling Dante with the dormant Rebellion in DMC3. In an attempt to prove his philosophy to Dante, Vergil (inadvertently helped Sparda) forced Dante to start confronting his demonic heritage in order to obtain more power and become stronger. This act awakened Rebellion and Dante's demonic powers (including Devil Trigger), making him a lot stronger. Better still, Dante remained dedicated to his original motives instead of giving in to lust for power. Thanks to his victory over Vergil, Dante became even more convinced that his humanity is his trump card and real key to victory. From that moment onwards, Dante continued to uphold his humanity while gradually coming to terms with his demonic side in order to become stronger and protect his loved ones. Over time, he became more and more proficient and comfortable in combining his demonic powers with his own fighting skills for combat, but he'd continue to treasure his human heritage more than his demonic heritage. The second occasion was in DMC1, where Dante used Sword of Sparda to channel Sparda's power in a battle against Mundus. This time round, Dante wasn't just dealing with a matter of being the son of an average demon. Due to Mundus' personal history with Sparda and the former's schemes for vengeance, Dante now finds himself dealing with the hardships of being the son of none other than the legendary Sparda who defeated Mundus. Dante was forced to start confronting Sparda's legacy and the consequences of Sparda's actions. Let's not forget that to Dante, Sparda was a famous yet vague, unfamiliar, distant paternal figure who had been absent from his life and presumably long dead, yet somehow putting Dante in quite a lot of misery and setting a high bar that Dante had no interest in surpassing. Eventually, Dante made it through and defeated Mundus with the help of Sparda and a redeemed Trish. Again, from the way Dante saw it, his humanity is the No.1 factor behind his victory over Mundus. Hence, Dante became more convinced that he was right all along. Maybe at some point, Dante had forgiven his father for being absent when their family tragedy occurred. But even then, Dante would still be uninterested in following Sparda's footsteps. Dante entrusting Sparda Sword to Trish (as opposed to keeping that sword with him at all times) demonstrates that human bonds, actual family members and friends means more to Dante than Sparda and all his legends combined. Dante's "rebellion" or "rebellious phase" against the idea of embracing his father's wishes and legacy went on smoothly until the third occasion took place in DMC5. Vergil/Urizen successfully made Dante realized that even with the aid of his allies, there are still limits that he cannot surpass and demonic foes too powerful for him to handle. As Dante revisited his old home and stared at his family portrait with the shattered Rebellion in his hand (which symbolizes how Dante's "rebellion" against his father is doomed to failure eventually, and that Dante's continuous rejection of his father's power can only take him so far in his quest to protect humans) and Sparda Sword on his back (Dante once again had to confront Sparda and the weight of Sparda's legacy, which is still neither easy nor pleasant to carry), out of desperation Dante remembered that he has one last hope against Urizen - his father, Sparda! At this point, it appears that Sparda is the only one who has any chances of defeating Urizen. While Sparda's no longer around to stop threats like Urizen, fortunately Sparda had already prepared for this very moment. It is right at this moment where Dante realized that the real legacy that Sparda gave specifically to Dante is the bulk of Sparda's own power (in the form of Sparda Sword) plus, most importantly, the option/choice for Dante to use Rebellion to absorb Sparda's power and permanently add it to his own power, thereby obtaining unparalleled power (enough power to defeat Urizen). But in order to claim this legacy for himself, Dante will need to overcome his aversion particularly towards Sparda and Sparda's cause. Dante has neither evil ambitions nor lust for power, and he holds onto his humanity well while using his demonic powers for good. These traits are precisely what Sparda was looking for. But when the time comes and the human world faces a threat too powerful for Dante to handle, is Dante ready to fully embrace his Sparda heritage (not just his demonic side) for the purpose of protecting mankind like Sparda once did? With great power comes great responsibilities. Dante will have to fully accept and make peace with his father, shoulder on everything (including burdens and responsibilities) that Sparda stood for, turn fully demonic while channeling all his demonic potential (via Sin Devil Trigger), and dedicate himself to take up Sparda's mantle to protect all of humanity from the entire demon world using Sparda's and his own power combined. With Urizen still at large and no other options left for Dante, Dante chose to accept all those things, thereby passing Sparda's test for him. Stabbing himself with the broken Rebellion while carrying Sparda on his back, Dante inherited Sparda's will and power, unlocked his full potential (i.e. Devil Sword Dante, Sword Formation and SDT), became powerful beyond reckoning and saved the human world from Urizen. As mentioned earlier, part of what makes this decision difficult for Dante is Dante's reluctance to bear the weight of Sparda's burdens. Individuals like Arkham coveted Sparda's power yet disregarded Sparda's will, but Dante desires neither of those. It was only for the sake of all humans (including those he personally knows and cherishes) that Dante willingly carry on Sparda's lifelong mission and wield the vast demonic power needed to achieve that. Maybe Dante's days of carefree, easygoing, fun party life are over (just as Vergil's portal-opening days are over). Still, Dante decided that although he shall commit himself to continue his father's lifelong mission, he will not live under Sparda's shadows, but instead be his own person and carve out his own legend/legacy. This is demonstrated by how Dante's new personal Devil Arm (DSD) is named after himself. I like to think that Sparda would applaud Dante for walking his own path in life while protecting the human world like he once did. Dante's love for humanity, combined with his lack of lust for power and unhealthy obsession over Sparda himself, as well as Dante's vast potential (as shown in DMC2 Majin Form) are the reasons Sparda picked Dante in particular to inherit his sealed demonic power, which is no doubt dangerous if fallen to the wrong hands. Outcome All in all, I imagine that from Sparda's POV, he has succeeded in protecting the human world after his death by giving the human world two powerful defenses against demon invasions: (1) the seal he created that separates both world, which is now maintained by Vergil using Yamato, and (2) a living deterrence in the form of Dante (who now wields power greater than Sparda's own).
