I have an interesting theory about what makes Rebellion equal in power to Yamato. (Spoilers)

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:45 AM PDT

It's often been discussed that Rebellion seems weak compared to Yamato, mostly due to a lack of stated special abilities until DMC5. Even after this was revealed, many still question if "union" is that great of an ability, especially compared to Yamato's "separation". Union is certainly the more nebulous term. Let's debunk that misconception, shall we?

Yamato in DMC3 is stated to be able to cut through anything, and even separated hell from the human world. Apart from a couple extreme circumstances (being blocked by Lady and Jester in 3, being broken in 4), Yamato has been shown to be absurdly powerful on its own. Dante used it to cut a Hell Gate in half from across most of Fortuna! So it's hard not to blame someone for thinking Rebellion is "just a big sword" by comparison. After all, it shares pretty much all of its moves with Alastor/Force Edge/Sparda/Merciless/Vendetta! Meanwhile Vergil's sword has Judgement Cuts, summoned swords, teleporting, dimension sealing... it has far more powers attributed to it than Rebellion does. All Rebellion seems to do is channel Dante's demonic energy for Drive and Stinger... which Vergil can also do with Force Edge, an objectively inferior weapon.

But, what's the main difference between Vergil and Dante as far as gameplay is concerned?

    Arsenal.

Dante is absolutely LOADED with weapons, while Vergil at most only has 3. One can assume the twins know how to wield Rebellion and Yamato due to some manner of instruction prior to the series, hence why they have similar proficiency with them in DMC3. As for Beowulf, martial arts isn't exactly the most unique ability a devil arm can give—Dante has no fewer than 4 different gauntlets that do just that, and hand to hand combat doesn't exactly require supernatural power to learn. I'm willing to assume Vergil could use all of his Beowulf techniques before and chose not to since they would be inferior to Yamato. Further proof here is Dante—during Sword Pierce in 3 or Round Trip in 1, Dante can use hand to hand moves without needing a gauntlet weapon equipped to do so. Lastly, while Beowulf certainly influences Vergil's DT, it isn't particularly extreme like most of Dante's. Vergil's weapons DON'T let him do anything he couldn't before, they just augment his already considerable abilities.

Meanwhile, looking at Dante, he has at least a dozen melee weapons and guns across the whole series. Some are simple, like the various swords and gauntlets, but others are very complex—namely Nevan, Lucifer, and Pandora. Yet, Dante can use them with incredible proficiency almost right out the gate. Most just dismiss this as a gameplay mechanic, but I believe if it's more than that. What if Rebellion's "union" ability is what allowed Dante to effectively learn and use all of his different devil arms across the series? It could literally "unite" his and the demon's power to allow him to draw out their potential more easily, whether he knew it or not.

Look at DMC3—he has Rebellion in all of his weapon and style acquisition cutscenes. He has Rebellion in ALL of his cutscenes despite your current load out. While his DT in 3 varies heavily depending on the weapon, the Rebellion DT is still apparent in all of them.

DMC1 shows that without Rebellion his DT looks radically different, completely lacking his usual red color scheme—plus he can't even DT with Force Edge or Sparda until the last boss. During this outing, he only acquired weapons he already had prior experience with, which made the adapting process easier and helped him develop his abilities further without Rebellion.

He has Rebellion all through DMC4, except now with a single DT form, the "mature" Rebellion DT.

Even when broken in 5, Dante still had Rebellion when he acquired Cavaliere, and Rebellion was there in spirit when he got Dr. Faust and King Cerberus due to being fused with Sparda. At that point, he understood the role Rebellion played through his entire life of devil hunting.

Rebellion has always been there. On its own, it's just a sword, but when united with other devil arms, Rebellion is what gives Dante the power to throw exploding darts, summon swarms of electric bats, fire massive lasers, control wind and fire, stop time, summon clones... every devil arm Dante uses is only as effective as it is because Rebellion is the conduit that links Dante's humanity to the devil arms he wields, and as we've all seen, human blood makes devils hellishly powerful in this series.

When you look at it like that, Yamato barely seems to be keeping up, doesn't it? Especially when Devil Sword Dante retains Rebellion's abilities on top of granting summoned swords AND Sin Devil Trigger. No better is this exemplified with the summoned swords appearing in ALL of his other weapon attacks during DT, not just swordmaster DSD moves.

Hopefully this theory helps clear up the misconceptions about the power disparity between Rebellion and Yamato.

Devil's Sword Dante will have new abilities like Yamato or just summon swords?

[SPOILER] A question that I can't get off from my mind since DMC5

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 02:16 PM PDT

Sorry if this is dumb/answered/whatever but I really can't stop thinking about it.

Why did Dante rush to stop V from killing/stabbing Urizen? He backed off in the beginning, letting V finish things up, but why did he rushed to intervene last minute? Did he realised something? Does Dante somehow doesn't want them to fuse back into Vergil? What am I missing

EDIT: Dante was quite sad (crying) from DMC3 when he lost Vergil, so it seems that he does still love his brother, but so why does he not want Vergil back? Also the fact that they both are in friendly terms at the very end of DMC5.

Im curious as to what everyone chose to use in regards to button mapping in dmc5? Did you use the default buttons or did you change them and what did you change them to? The original buttons were very frustrating imo but once i found out i could change them, the game became way more enjoyable.

Is it true that in DMC4, Dante will use moves you teach him in his boss fight on repeat playthroughs?

Devil May Cry 4 Nero Buster question

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 05:00 PM PDT

During nero's buster grab sequence, for example when you stagger a boss so you can grab them, do I need to mash B (xbox) to raise the combo/style points? Or does pressing B not make any difference

Do I ever need to tap B with a buster grab in general? For normal enemies

When Dante isn't using his devil arms they just disappear. Is this a pure gameplay function or is there a lore reason why this happens

How characters would have looked in DMC reboot

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 02:29 PM PDT

Overall, almost everyone knows that the original Devil May Cry series is obviously the Alpha, Omega and best part about anything to do with Devil May Cry. One thing though that I think about quite frequently, is how characters we've seen in the original Devil May Cry games (Trish, Lady, Nero, V, etc.) would have looked like and acted like in the reboot series. I've searched online to see what other people would think and was curious to see what everyone here thought! (On a side note, I think that Kat was being built up to be that universes Lady. She talked about her dad, and in a way almost shared similar looks)
