I finished DMC 4 (Vanilla) for the first time, it honestly feels like a giant prototype for DMC 5 (Review)

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 05:45 PM PDT

This game feels like the definition of "two steps forward, one step back" from 3. There's tons of things to praise about this game, and tons of things I don't like.

First the story, it feels, incomplete..... I think everything up to the Credo fight was paced well enough, but after that it just felt like a rush towards the end. Nero in 4, is a serviceable protagonist, he feels like a standard anime protagonist and there's really not much to say. I think they tried to do a thing where being a demon is a bad thing and it led to him being outcasted, but it really didn't expand much further into that. Dante's campaign, despite being clearly rushed cause of development issues, was actually pretty fun, I wish there was more locations for him to go, but I honestly didn't mind. It was just Dante having a fun time, and I couldn't stop smiling everytime he did anything. Still a weak story overall, and I hope it gets better in 5.

Nero is more fun to play than Dante in this game. Despite being hella linear. Busters are fun, simple but has tons of uses. Exceed is honestly weird but satisfying. I LOVE using it, but Max-Act is a bit too tight for a casual like me, and it feels kinda random when you get it, and it feels like guessing sometimes to get the max act.

Dante would be a lot more fun, if he had 1 more gun and sword (That isn't Yamato). He feels almost perfect, but I feel like he's missing something. It's hard to pinpoint what it is, but maybe something like Agni and Rudra or Cerberus. But other than that, aesthetically and visually this is probably my favorite Dante imo. From sound effects to Rueben Langdon's performance (He absolutely knocked it out of the park here, by far his best Dante voice), everything non gameplay wise about this Dante feels perfect

Overall, DMC 4 is an outstanding action game but just a really good video game overall. I wish enemies were a lot better designed (Fuck the Blitz), the story was actually completed, and Dante was actually completed gameplay wise. Overall a solid 8.5/10

    Time to play DMC 5

In the Japanese subtitles of DMC5 Mundus is referred to as "dead".

In the Japanese subtitles of DMC5 Mundus is referred to as "dead".

Devil May Cry 5, mission 14.

"Malphas: If he reaches the fruit, it will all be over. Even Mundus failed to reign over the human world... Surely, we know he will not." There is a detail about Mundus only in the Japanese subtitles.

In the subtitles it says ムンドゥス 亡き and the word 亡き (naki) means "deceased". This is quite different in comparison with the dubs because we know that Mundus wasn't killed, he was sealed but maybe Malphas doesn't know that and considers him dead.

This page might have made you believe that Mundus was killed. The fan translation said "he's slain many demons", but the verb in Japanese that was translated as "to slay" can be interpreted in several ways.

The verb that is used in the Japanese version is 屠る (hofuru) and while it can have the meaning "to slay" "to slaughter" or "to massacre" it can also mean "to overpower", "to vanquish" (an enemy, opponent) and it doesn't necessarily imply killing. It's ambiguous and personally I prefer to interpret the text with the meaning of "to overpower" because I consider that it's better if we just say that he "defeated" the demons, because to me "slay" implies you took your opponent's life and we know that it's not the case with Mundus and I can't say that it's confirmed based on the Japanese subtitles from DMC5.

I just finished the story for the first time and I still can't get over that opening cutscene with a Nero and Nico going down the road. I don't know if it's just because it's been over 10 years since the last DMC and now we have 5 which is fucking smooth and sexy of a game. It just emotionally yaknow? What were some moments you guys felt emotional about?

    No Regrets

I have never played DMC in my life, but the past few days have been great! Even though the bosses may feel a bit tedious and some of the game feels a little slow, I'm still having a blast. I have decided to play in chronological order and am at the tail end of DMC3, prepping to head into DMC1. I expect great things, even if it's not quite what 3 was (as I know this is where DMC found its identity). I play with an open mind and a hunger for the story (even if it isn't too much right off the bat).

Meanwhile, I appreciate any support and advice for my upcoming fight with Arkham and for my further experiences with DMC.

Since I'll be finished with DMC3 by the time this is seen (most likely), I would like to end with a question:

What was YOUR favourite part of DMC3?
