Devil May Cry 1 early concepts referenced in the sample script read by Drew Coombs.

Devil May Cry 1 early concepts referenced in the sample script read by Drew Coombs.

In an interview with Drew Coombs, Dante's first voice actor, he read from a sample (provisional) script that was used when he auditioned for Dante.

The script had things which were different from the game and I even asked Kamiya-san if he specifically wrote that scenario to be used for the audition or if it was written by a person who was in charge casting for the voice actors. Based on what Kamiya-san said in response to my message, he said that he didn't hear about the stuff I told him that were in the script, although he said that he used to send provisional scripts to be used for auditions.

In the provisional script it said that Dante became an undercover cop and this is most likely a reference to an early concept of Resident Evil 4 that became Devil May Cry, where Dante was named Tony Redgrave and he was a police officer. Although it's a minor detail, his occupation could have been a police officer or detective.

As you can see in the image from the "Devil May Cry Graphic File" artbook, Dante is called "death cop", although the word 刑事 (keiji) is usually translated as "detective".

There is also the word 探偵 (tantei) that also means detective but it's mostly a private detective/investigator who doesn't work for the police. In the 3124 Graphic Arts book there is a comment for this image and it says 警察官 (keisatsukan) which means police officer.

Translation: "An image drawn at the beginning of production. At the time, the setting was about Dante being a detective and this image shows him together with his fellow partners. Dante is strongly associated with "guns and swords", however there is a reason why he doesn't carry a sword on his back in this image.

As you would expect of a detective, carrying a sword seemed implausible.

Because swords were required in the game, during development Dante was given a sword to carry on his back.

If the detective setting had survived, what would have become of the character Dante?"

    https://preview.redd.it/fka4vnftsxm71.jpg?width=4960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=977cbd5ee51ddb07d98a01c6b138076506583d7d

I like this image of Dante with a plushie :D

Translation: "This is also an image where Dante's occupation was a detective.

The setting is at a bar which he goes to regularly and he's being made fun of by his partners for the cute teddy bear which doesn't suit him that is by his side.

Is the teddy bear an evidence from a case, maybe?" There is a commentary about this image in the 3124 Graphic Arts book but the story for it is different. The book is localized, so I copied the fragment from there: "A day in the life of Dante. He bought a teddy bear to give someone as a present. The setting is clearly a bar, and I really like the atmosphere here."

The text in the speech bubble says: "Hey, your partner today is a cute bear?"

Localization: "On a date with a bear today, are we?"

Another reference in the sample script, at least that's what I believe and it's related to a name that appears in an early concept which is in the "Devil May Cry Graphic File" book. In the sample script, it said that Dante was adopted by the Redgrave family and the family had a daughter and it could be that her name came from here

    https://preview.redd.it/4t2ltu60txm71.jpg?width=4960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c41921737f7aebbe0b1ac79d9210cc0a7dd1f77c

So, in the scenario of that provisional script, Dante had a foster sister named Aisha. I hope that was the name that Drew Coombs said, I might have misheard him. Could have been Naisha, but I'd say it was Aisha because of this image from the guidebook.

Translation: "Rough sketch of Dante and his female sidekick. Dante is very different from the one in the game.

His name was Tony and his occupation was a treasure hunter.

From that time, it was decided that the main character would wear a coat, but in this rough sketch it looks like he's dressed in punk fashion.

Later on, he was given a double rider's jacket in the style of a long coat.

The female character is a prototype of Trish and her name was Aisha.

The name was taken from Stevie Wonder's beloved daughter.

By the way, there is also a song called "Aisha" by Stevie Wonder." (I believe it's actually called "Isn't She Lovely?")

That sample script was interesting, I have not heard before some of the details that were mentioned in the script such as Dante being much younger when he lost his family at 4 years old and being adopted, but as we have seen, some of ideas were based on some early concepts.

    Thoughts on "The Duel"?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 03:26 PM PDT

I'm talking about the music that plays in Mission 19. I think it captures the feel of the fight nicely. The rising string-like synths provide tension, the choral stings work so well when they line up with attacks, the arpeggiator and guitar are like the backbone and kind of feel like they represent Vergil and Dante respectively. I think it's a solid track, but I can't help but feel underwhelmed. As I said I think it captures the feel of the fight, but I don't think it captures the gravitas of this moment and the history behind it. This is a confrontation 5 games and almost 20 years in the making, I'd expect the track to be the standout track for the game like the Vergil tracks in DMC3.

If I had to guess, I'd say they wanted to underplay the music here so as not to take away from the Silver Bullet moment in the next mission, and I can understand that to an extent. Silver Bullet was fantastic and more than fits the bill for the kind of momentous track I'd want for Mission 19. However, I still don't think it's the choice I would have made. I think keeping the "The Duel" as an instrumental track is a good call, as it makes the vocals of Silver Bullet stand out, but I would have still gone all out on "The Duel". I was thinking of what I would do, and there are so many options: a medley of all Vergil fight tracks (including DmC), a piece using the same instruments as those in the Nelo Angelo tracks, a remix of "Devils Never Cry", a remix of "Legacy" in minor, etc.

But none of those are strictly new which is the main thing I will credit "The Duel" with. It is original. So besides composing a new track from the ground up (which would probably be my preference) I think I would keep the track relatively similar, but make it more dynamic over the course of the fight and just go harder with it. Something I would love to hear is for some insane shredding in the latter half of the fight. We're likely to hear the drop at 1:16 (usually when Vergil goes into his SDT) more than once in the fight, so change up the second time. I'd love for the string-synth to be replaced by a guitar going nuts over the melody. I know the guitar does get harder near the end of the original song but it's serving as a bass more than anything throughout; I'm talking high, screeching guitar, shredding along to the melody. Have the drums add more embellishments, add more layers to the choral stings to make them feel even more desperate, etc. Just bring everything up to 11 for the home stretch. I feel like once you've hit that drop and gone a bit further you've already heard everything the track has to offer, but you've still got half the fight left.

Just wondered if I was alone in this, and if not what would you have done/preferred? Also has anyone done a substantial remix of "The Duel"? I'd love to hear it.

Here's the track for reference at the timestamp I mentioned earlier https://youtu.be/kvQjROrFN80?t=75
