Is this DMC reference in Okami? Aside from his katana which should be reference to Yamato

Jesus, this was certainly an experience I won't forget that fast. What can I say what hasn't been said a million times before? I won't go into detail, but goddamn, for a half finished game, just like MGSV, I'm glad I've overcome this one.

DMC5's mission structure works better for the series than that of DMC 1/3/4

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 03:31 PM PDT

I love DMC 1, 3, and 4. Especially 3. But 5's changes to the level structure fits the games a lot better and is more fun for newcomers and veterans alike in my opinion.

In case it's unclear what I'm referring to, older DMC games take place in one large gothic setting (I'll say "castles" going forward, even though 3 takes place in a tower) that you explore throughout the missions. Each mission takes place in a certain part of the castle, but you can generally move about and explore. You find magical keys as you progress, and then you need to backtrack or explore to find where the key goes. Sometimes you need to solve puzzles, too.

So to start, here's what I like about the structure of 1,3, and 4. I think it's neat to come to the same areas in different states or times of day. It's cool to see something you recognize become twisted and sinister as the stakes rise. DMC 1 has this with the castle becoming darker as you go, and DMC 3 has the tower shatter and reassemble itself in strange, twisted ways. Also, focusing on one environment lets the devs flesh it out more, leaving lots of cool setpieces that can be examined for the player to speculate about the history of the setting.

But in my opinion, the drawbacks outweigh the positives, and the parts that work can be preserved. Having such an emphasis on exploration in a character action game is a bad fit. I quite like things like secret missions, blue orbs, etc - but these things are all optional. When you have to explore just to find the next place to go, it grinds the pacing to a halt. Veterans of the series, have you ever watched someone play DMC1 or 3 for the first time? I love watching people experience DMC blindly, but it's painful seeing them stumble around for half an hour trying to figure out where to stick the Vajura. It bores newcomers who were drawn in by the combat or stylish cutscenes.

Furthermore, backtracking is boring in this kind of game because there's not really anything new to find. I love Metroidvanias and Zeldas, but there's a big difference between returning with new abilities to find secrets and literally just running through the same areas as fast as possible to get to new stuff because the devs ran out of budget.

Finally, the emphasis on exploration in gameplay is only meaningful the first time through the game. DMC as a series heavily encourages players to replay on the next difficulty. I'd say that you haven't really finished a DMC game if you just beat it on Normal and moved on. Playing on higher difficulties feels like a totally different game - you fight totally different enemies with different behaviors, and you have to level up your skills to match. You end up playing completely differently. But the same can't be said about the exploration. On your second playthrough, you already know where all the magic keys go, and the puzzles don't get any harder either. So you just rush through them. You don't get anything out of replaying those parts of the game.

I've read people saying that DMC5's level structure is reminiscent of old PS2 games, when other series are going open world and whatnot. But I don't think that's a bad thing. I think DMC5 is the result of taking a hard look at the old games and truly trimming whatever doesn't enhance the main draw of the game - the combat. As a result, the experience feels much tighter and more polished. In my opinion, even as a lover of open world games, a lot of games that go exploration heavy for no reason could benefit from doing the same. I really hope subsequent DMC games keep the same structure.

DMC HD collection. No controllers work. No idea what to do

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 03:37 PM PDT

I tried my xbox 1 controller and ps4 controller with ds4. Every time I plug the controller in, inputs work for 1-2 seconds then they stop working and the game permanently inputs the joystick down. Only the keyboard and mouse work, but I tried that and its unplayable.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Nothing works. I wanted to play the original dmc games before 5, but I guess I will have to skip them.

    Fluffy manager not working

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 04:43 PM PDT

Right now for me it's impossible to open fluffy manager as it just closes the moment I open it again. And form friend of mine he can't use his mods no matter what he did. He even uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it still didn't work. Is this happening to anyone else?
