    The Story of Sparda

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 01:27 AM PST

"Two millenniums ago, there was a war. Between the human world and the other... the Underworld. But somebody from the Underworld woke up to justice, and stood up against this legion, alone. His name was Sparda. Later, he quietly reigned the human world, and continued to preserve harmony, until his death. He became a legend, The Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda."

This is the first thing you see when you start up Devil May Cry, the story that started the series both in lore and in game. Even now, it holds up well.

    What do you think about?

I really think playable Vergil needs a block just like the boss version.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 01:30 AM PST

What I mean his boss block is just a block like the boss version one...

    Really, it's really simple.

Imagine this, if you hold lock on, it will block anything in front of you if you're not attacking regardless if you are moving, it consumes DT bar, and if you are in SDT mode it will deflect the first attack that hits you provided you have concentration lvl3.

Blocking grants concentration, at concentration lvl3 you automatically deflect any attack out of SDT but it consumes concentration and ranged projectile deflects don't consume concentration.

What good is flexing if you can't show your superiority than demonstrating to the enemy their attacks are useless? That's literally the boss version, if you attack him while he's just walking he will just deflect and counter attack, or space out in phase 1.

It's just weird how the inputs for his current block require you to be idle, as well as consuming an unreasonably large amount of concentration.

I wish Playable Vergil could do the boss's things, Dante's playable version can do what the boss version can... except royal block, that would be pretty weird ngl.

DMC Theory: Argosax the "Immortal" (text-heavy warning)

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 08:36 PM PST

Argosax is, like almost everything presented in DMC2, wasted potential due to its poor execution. Unlike Mundus who is the trigger for the plot of the first game and the main antagonist since minute one, argosax feels most of the time distant with the plot and being more like a Macguffin than a character because Arius fulfills the role of the main antagonist who establishes the objective of preventing him from obtaining the Arcanas in order to free Argosax and obtain what he wants. Making him irrelevant to us most of the time as there is no interaction with him until the last mission of Dante's campaign. However, while it may not be of much use to continue talking about him after he died at the end of their fight, it's not too late to talk about his character and how his presence It offers an interesting approach that could enrich the background of the franchise, especially in something as unexplored as everything that concerns the demon world as such. So I hope this exploration gives you another perspective to contemplate the panorama (always keeping in mind that this is pure speculation without official reinforcement):

Of course we have to clarify the first question for those who didn't touch the DMC2, about who Argosax is. Broadly speaking, Argosax is a Demon King, one of the four that exist (or existed depending on how you look at it) in the Underworld and who fight among themselves for absolute dominance, especially against Mundus due to making it clear that they are mortal rivals to each other, carrying a feud beyond competition for power. However, Sparda did face Argosax once, and with the help of the Protectors and the Arcanas, Sparda manages to defeat and confirm him in a subspace on Vie de Marli (currently called Dumary Island).

Although there may be little we know about Argosax compared to its Mundus counterpart, there are still interesting things to be gained from what is available. The first details that are known about him is his own name, which unlike the classic direct reference to historical or literary mythologies, carries a more subtle categorical baptism. The name of Argosax can be considered as a derivation of the Greek name Argos or Argus, which is used in many characters within Greek mythology and which means "bright". This may not sound like a big deal at first, some seem to agree with the appearance he has when fighting him in his final form or others more attentive would say that it is reinforcement of the enmity against Mundus who is nicknamed as the Prince of Darkness, and therefore, opposite poles each other. However, knowing in depth the context of the world, one can distinguish the genuine weight that it implies that he has that type of name. Within the DMC cosmology (explained in the DMC3 Manga), we are told that earlier than we know, Pluto, the first being in the universe and later the first Demon King, divided all creation into two, one where the darkness was (demon world) and the other where the light was (human world), marking that dualistic distinction between both spaces. So the fact that a Demon King has a name that is more reminiscent of the origins of humans offers an implication that opens the door to interesting questions, oriented to what is a relationship with humans. Is Argosax the first human being to transform into a demon and got so much power that he reached the position of being a King? An attractive topic that they could elaborate on later, but that is not the theory that I wanted to address.

Apart from the name, another detail from which information can be obtained is its design, which although it can be defined as very minimalist or even simple from a critical perspective, the fact that it can take both a masculine and feminine form has a rather particular symbolic charge. It could be said that it is reminiscent of the Adamas concept of Gnosticism (derived branch of Christianity characterized in its philosophy of seeking salvation through the pursuit of knowledge), which states that in the book of Genesis it was not Adam from whom God removed a rib to make Eve, but rather that, Adam and Eve arise from the separation of this being from who was the possessor of a knowledge beyond logic and science, a divine knowledge. It may sound far-fetched at first, but there are other elements that point to this assumption, first there would be the objective of Arius, who in his first meeting with Lucia explained that his intention is to attain absolute wisdom and transcend all (textual words). Another example is the boss Bolverk, a demon under the orders of Argosax who used one of the many names that was called Odin, father of all the nordic æsir gods who were characterized by seeking all knowledge to the point of gouging out an eye and even stabbing himself with his own spear. And also this wouldn't be the last time the franchise has worked with elements of Gnosticism. Since William Blake (an artist that DMC5 takes reference from several of his works), is a saint for the Catholic Gnostic Church for his books and paintings apart from being awarded in 1949 as the best religious artist of that year for his works.

But even with everything exposed, it doesn't seem like anything substantial to propose a theory, it seems more like the construction of a trivia of the character. So I will propose the following questions: What exactly was Matier going to tell Dante? In this game, Matier offers as payment for Dante's services is to tell him about Sparda and his relationship with Argosax and with the Protectors. And although in the end Dante tells us that he already knew that Sparda was imprisoned on the other side of the seal of the Arcana with Argosax and later was able to return, doesn't explain the reason for the elaborate method they used to imprison him compared to others that Sparda closed on his own. Since both the Temen-ni-gru, the HellGate of Fortuna and Mundus himself used an artifact that he created from his power (perfect amulet, Yamato, and the DSSparda), So the Argosax prison is all the more outrageous why Sparda required the support of the Protectors. And she makes you ask, "Why?" What truth does this Demon King hold that he sees necessary confirm it in such a complicated way? What power does this wisdom give him to make it so dangerous to the point that the Protectorate dedicated generations to guard the Arcana? And what if I tell you that there is an answer that goes back to the end of both campaigns of the game.

After the moment that Dante sabotaged the ritual to free Argosax and Dante will kill Arius, the ritual depowered three of the four Arcana, causing a portal to open to where he is, and while the portal isn't "open" enough for Argosax to get out, his influence over the human world could make it much more prominent and cause even more devastation. So Dante decides to cross the portal to kill Argosax. The first fight against Argosax no longer gives an indication of what his omniscience may be capable of, and that amorphous form made up of other bosses we had already killed shows us his connection with Death, and it seems that all the demons, when they die definitively, are sent with him to melt among the other corpses. And if we take into account that in this fight we take care of eliminate the demons to retain part of their form, it seems that we are helping Argosax and adopt his true form because the faster we kill them, the less residence they possess and yield to surrender to that mass of dead flesh. And when arriving at the second form of Argosax, their separation seems like a kind of rebirth, one phoenix egg is born from the ashes of others. With this we can include that Argosax has control over death, and the scariest thing of all is that he doesn't seem limited to demons. Returning to Lucia, she is faced with another type of adversary, with Arius once again. But this is impossible, if Dante killed Arius with his guns and if his body fell from his company building, so there's no way he was still alive. And it's true, because here we are facing the body of Arius who, under the influence of Argosax, was reanimated and transformed into that creature (Corrupted Arius). This influence of Argosax reaches such a degree that it disfigures Arius's body to the point of unrecognizable to transform into a demon that would be the extension of his will (Arius-Argosax). But fortunately, Both Dante and Lucia managed to defeat their respective bosses, leaving no trace of Argosax to commit said atrocities on the human world and saving everyone. Right?

I would like to say that (not really), but nothing indicates that Argosax can return in the target form that he demonstrated here, in fact the fact that we find him with that "chrysalis" form indicates that Sparda he could have killed him in his day but it meant nothing to him if he could always come back. So it would be appropriate to ask when he would do it and more importantly, if his strength depends on the demons that uses to feed his strength before he is reborn, what if it was Mundus who feeds him, or even the other Demon Kings? What if Dante and Vergil, being in the Underworld, start to kill the remaining demon kings, would it only hasten Argosax's return with the power of the most powerful demons?

That would be a plot twist I'd like to see in a future Devil May Cry game.

What multimedia things are canon/good/worth my time?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 05:19 AM PST

I've been struck with the notion of doing a full replay of the series. I've never read or watched ANY of the non-game content. Is any of it important for my understanding? Is any of it just particularly good?

    Hot Take

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 04:51 PM PST

Dante Must Die mode in DMC5 is not good for Nero.

Hear me out; I love this game, however this particular game mode is not good due to the specific changes that make DMC5 unique. This mode feels like a slap on mode with no regard for the actual game itself.

Nero is the worst receiver of this since his game play revolves around the destruction of the breakers in order to switch game play around. However you aren't rewarded for destroying them with more breakers, instead DMD mode gives you a much more scarce pick up rate. For a game that doesn't want you to refill as much through the store, they really didn't give much option in this higher level.

That's a big chunk of gameplay that you must play conservatively lest you end up with no breakers.

The other 2 characters don't have to worry about their resource management unless it's DT but that is very much in line with the gameplay elements and works well.

It feels very much like no thought was given to that and would have worked better if they had decided to make drop rates increase with style level and enemies dropping them. It would certainly make them feel better instead of just picking them up randomly from the floor.

There should also be a button to turn off specific joke breakers as the chances are too high that you'll get bad drops since they are in the pool of available drops.

DMC4 SE - Lady and Trish EX outfits WHAT ARE THE F**KING REQUIREMENTS

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 05:49 AM PST

    Hey all,

I really didn't want to resort to this, but do any of you guys know the official requirements for unlocking Trish & Lady EX outfits?

I have neither, I've done the 30+ demons in the credits on both Devil Hunter and DMD, and I'm getting nothing. I watched the cutscenes too because apparently that does something.

I've everything under the goddamn sun for these stupid outfits and still have nothing.

Any ideas on what else I need to do?

    Thanks in advance.

    DMC recap

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 07:48 PM PST

I've played a fair bit of DMC 1, 2 and 3 and found them a bit dated for my taste, but 5 looks sooooo polished and fun and was wondering if there were any recommendations on a 1-4 recap video so i could go play 5 and understand the story. Maybe if i really love 5 ill play 1-4 but i just want to jump straight to 5 in all honesty.
