Unpopular Opinion: The first Devil May Cry game is my favorite Posted: 12 Jun 2021 06:23 PM PDT I've been a DMC fan since the first one came out - I got it that week. I went through and replayed all the DMC games again (even 2) recently, and to this day the first game is my favorite. Here is why: I bought DMC3 on release day, as well. For years if you asked me what my favorite game was, I'd say DMC3. DMC3 was and is a goddamn revelation. BUT... it actually represented a very, very major shift in focus relative to the first two games. The emphasis on stylish combat and more technical combat - it's easy to forget that that is not exactly what the first game was like, really - or rather, the stylish combat of DMC1 was incidental - it was not the whole point of the game to execute encounters with specific move variety or achieving certain feats with certain moves - the point was to survive against the hellish enemies in your path. And so then, with DMC4 and DMC5, what DMC3 did right was embraced more and more. These games are great - I love them - I platinumed every DMC game but 2. But the truth remains that when DMC3 came out, amazing though it was and still is, we lost the ONLY survival-horror-painted character action game. No other series (ninja gaiden, bayonetta, God of War, etc.) filled in the shoes of the first two DMC games in terms of vibe. Every character action game from DMC3 on basically went the pseudo-Zelda route (Darksiders) or went straight up the "stylish action" route predicated on the success of DMC. The mix of horror and action I thought was really cool and that's what hooked me onto the series - it disappeared with the third game that had a more laid-back, anime-style depiction of characters, enemies, etc., as well as an emphasis on over-the-top combat that didn't feel like "damn I'm going to die to these hellish things" but instead "how much can I swag out on these punching bags" (obv omitting some of the hard enemies from each game).
