Posted: 02 Jun 2021 01:33 PM PDT So the series where I review and share my thoughts on all the previous Dmc games has returned. I've recently done my review of Dmc 3, and I really liked it. During my time writing that review I was a few hours in playing Dmc 4, and I was enjoying the game. After my completion of it, my opinion is very conflicted. It's kinda hard to put a basic label on how I feel like I could with 3, so let's get into my review of 4. Story: The story in this game is nonsensical, I won't get into too much detail, because not a lot of this game's story really contributes to the dmc lore, other than Nero's meeting with Dante, and his relationship with Kyrie and Credo. The whole thing with His Holiness, I think his name is Sanctus? I don't know, that's how bored I was, is so generic because all he wants to do is play god, by releasing demons into Fortuna, but then saving the people from the problem he caused? He wants power? But why? We hardly know anything about this guy and the lack of backstory and relationship to any of the other characters is what separates him from great characters of the same vein like Vergil and Arkham. Same with Gloria's involvement. Why did she feel the need to infiltrate the order? It was so important to the mission that she sacrificed, the SWORD SPARDA!? We don't see her exchange any valuable info with Nero or Dante, unless it was offscreen which is lame, so what was the point? She legit just gave Sanctus one of the most powerful weapons known, all to get promoted to a position that doesn't have any effect on the story in the long run. Bruh. Another character that I have a problem with is Kyrie… This character was used better in 5, than in the game we see her in, how Capcom? There are multiple great, and emotional scenes where Nero is pretty much having a mental breakdown about being so close, but unable to save her, (Huge ups to Nero's V.A in this game) but it's completely ruined by Kyrie's cold, emotionless face, and her lack of lines. This woman just does not speak at the worst moments. And this is probably due to this game's unfinished state. In general, very fun during the first hours of the game, starts to wear on you as it goes on. Exploration: It sucks, it's bad, it leaves a foul taste in my mouth. Alright to be real, the environments and areas that the game takes you through are really pretty and great to look at. The graphics of this game are great, and hold up today. However, there is too much backtracking, too many repeating assets, ironic because of the fact that the devs tried so hard to have as much variety as possible in their game, which led them to have to repeat levels. These missions all just mush together because of how much of the map you can access within each mission, and how many times you repeat them with Dante. And the puzzles feel like they are less about taking you through levels, and more of a vehicle to create levels that function like fucking mazes for you to get lost in and backtrack through. Music: Pretty good. The battle themes were nice and catchy. Bael's and Berial's theme were the most memorable for me. But the true best song was definitely We Shall Never Surrender Post Credit Ver. Goddamn, for a slow paced, emotional piece, it fills you with a burst of energy every time. Alright so for the combat, I have a range of topics that all sort of fall under this umbrella of unfinished-ness, and that really negatively impacted my experience of the game. Nero: Feels like the most complete character in this game. He feels like he has the tools and abilities and the ssstyle to fit in this game's combat. Nero not having payline hurts my soul, and table hopper just looks like a knockoff version of Vergil's do- ohhh that makes sense now. But something I have a problem with is his devil bringer. This shit has no range, none. Nero's max level snatch in this game feels like Nero's starting level snatch in 5, it's ridiculous. And to perform buster it feels like, if you are further away than a pube hair away you'll miss. This all contributes to the gameplay feeling pretty stiff in comparison to the other installments, which I will bring up again later. A big part that irks me is how his exceed mechanic works in this game. As he has more of his exceed gauge built up, the faster he descends to the ground when performing an aerial attack. So in practice, you exceed when you want to deal more damage, but don't in exchange for more air time. In concept it's pretty interesting, but in practice it just feels like a dampener on your combat, because who fucking cares when you can just reset height with JC's (Jump cancels)? Also in comparison to 5, his buster feels almost mandatory to play optimally and deal with the enemies in this game… We will come back to this later. And finally, his gun sounds really weak, in comparison to how powerful it is during gameplay. Dante: Wacky woohoo pizza man is back, with 4 styles plus darkslayer, 3 weapons, and 3 guns. Dante's kit is hugely expanded from 3, so I will make multiple sections on each of his mechanics and how I feel about them. -Styles: Swordmaster cool, and Gunslinger cool, they just add to his options so no complaints there, and super fun to use. Trickster feels super stiff. I don't know why, but his dashes are slow on cooldown, which adds to the clunky feeling, and even giving him two teleports still feel super short-range. His royal guard, I found no use for in combat, besides guard flying, and his guard being so breakable is what deters me from actually using it effectively. Darkslayer feels super incomplete, and only feels good to use while JCing and using swordmaster. -Weapons: Rebellion is fine, feels great, very guuud. Gilgamesh, these things feel like the weakest gauntlet weapons I've ever used, ironic because they are very strong in-game. I think it's due to the artstyle, because they mesh his attack anims to give the feeling like he's hitting super fast, but in combat it ends up looking very weak. There is just NO feeling of impact at all. Lucifer is painfully incomplete, all the ground attacks feel and look the same. Half the time I don't even know what move I'm doing they're so similar. All the weapons in Dmc are supposed to feel like they could have an entire action game built around them, that's not the case with Lucifer. -Guns: They do what they do as always. Great to use, feel great. Wouldn't mind if they brought back Pandora. But it feels like Pandora is super weak, even it's giant laser attack thingy. Vergil: He is the storm, that does approach. Although he doesn't have backtrick, unless in DT, and his tricking is always tied to the sword in an enemy, which is FUCKING DUMB. But yea I mean, if ya want to feel all powerful, Vergil's your boi. Very fun character. Lady: Her guns felt the absolute best to use, it's like each of her guns are complete hand cannons in their own right. Although, she lacks moves in the melee department. Add some more melee attacks and launchers, and cool ways to string together her projectiles, and she could become a very fun character in the future. Trish: My favorite character to play as currently. Her playstyle being revolved around roundtrip is super cool. Her use of the sword, throwing it and summoning it back to her is badass, and allows her to pull in enemies as well as attack from a distance. And her bareknuckle style? This is what Gilgamesh should have been. Her lightning effects look snappy and powerful, she's got great range, gap closers, combo options both on the ground and in the air, and her moves are some of the flashiest in the game. Pandora is fucking busted with her, which is awesome. Please bring her back, Capcom. Up her damage with sword Sparda, and make her, and Lady playable in the future for how wasted they were in 5. Bosses: Not much to say, they're fun. It's cool to see Nero's busters on them, and it's disappointing to see Dante get devil arms that don't fit. Aaaand Sanctus, can fuckin die. He's like the epitome of bosses that are not likable in Dmc games, because he's just a minigame. Enemies: While the characters and what they do are in general very fun, the major problem that I face are the enemies that you fight. It's so painfully obvious that all the enemies work for Nero specifically, and that's one of the reasons he feels the best to play. All their defenses can be overcome just by using his buster, which none of the other characters have access to. I suspect that Trish being one of my favorite characters to play is due to the fact that all her options also happen to work on the enemies. And it's what makes Dante so unfun IMO. Enemies just don't give two shits about what you do, unless you press the buster button. They have passive armor that doesn't allow you to launch them on the first try, shields that feel awkward to maneuver around, and often times their mobility is much better than yours, adding to that clunky feeling. The best enemies are the ones that react to what you do, and can't just ignore your combos on them. The scarecrow enemies being the most notable. Things like Faust, Chimeras, and Blitz are so annoying to fight against because they have ways of just ignoring your attacks, which isn't suited for a game meant to perform stylish strings of combos. Final Thoughts: I recognize that I'm not the best Dmc player ever, and that there are mechanics in this game that I don't yet understand. But most of the complaints I've listed are objective issues that don't fit the design philosophy of this game franchise. The boring level design, the annoying enemies, the complete lack of a training mode. All these factors make me not want to go back and explore more of what this game has to offer, and that makes me quite sad in all honesty. I feel like I had a bit of fun while playing for the first time, and that in the end I might have been too harsh, or that I dislike this game more than the average person, but hey, these are all my thoughts. Let me know what you think, and if you have any questions. Thanks for reading this long ass post. I'll probably review Dmc 1 next. [link] [comments] | ||

"That day, if our positions were switched" Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:01 PM PDT How exactly were their positions that day all that different? Dante was in a closet, then he escaped the burning house, Vergil was outside, then he escaped the house, what's so different? BTW I think if they switched their positions Dante would be a pretty powerful and badass demon that would've taken the Force edge and the power at the end of 3, and Vergil a very succesfull human raising his son and probably not being bankrupt.
