    I personally think yes, it is possible to make such a game work. When I asked myself this at first, I thought of Final Fantasy 15 - a game that I think, despite having inferior combat to most DMC games, manages to make a hack n' slash / weapons based combat system that works well with its open world, which features animals and monsters that roam in various natural environments and sometimes city based environments. From there, I kinda thought about how I'd enjoy a game that was essentially FF15 with DMC enemies and DMC combat - and that seemed like something I'd REALLY enjoy. While the quest structure of a lot of open world games may not be ideal for a series that primarily uses a stages format, I do feel that the same gameplay and enemies in a new gameplay setting really could work.

    Fun fact tho: FF15's combat actually got me interested in DMC in the first place lol
