Honestly sad this game pitch never materialized into anything. It looked really good for a Wii game.

Is elemental weakness a thing in DMC5?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 06:07 PM PDT

I thought about this when fighting King Cerberus earlier today. I know in DMC3 the original Cerberus was weak to Agni's fire damage, and Beowulf was weak to Yamato's dark damage.

Is that a thing in DMC5? Would Hellbats take extra damage from Cerberus and Bathomets from Balrog?

Where's a good starting point to get into the series?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 05:23 PM PDT

I remember playing DMC3 with friends like 10+ years ago, but since it wasn't mine I didn't have time to "git gud" at it like my buddy, and generally sucked ass at it. Been craving a hack n slash lately, but is there any easier place to start any of you would recommend? Cheers.

Completed DMC 1 as a 4 and 5 fan. My thoughts.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 08:38 AM PDT

This is going to be pretty long and rambly but bare with me here.
So I'll start by saying that it was 80% amazing and 20% garbage. And I pretty much never say something like that about anything so allow me to elaborate.

DMC 1 was very refreshing in an odd way. I could see the Resident Evil DNA in it. I was almost scared, the reason I wasn't was because I knew I was Dante and could dispatch anything I came across. The way Phantom would chase you around, big open areas introduced enemies exactly when you were about to exit them and how the island would change and show different parts of itself in ways that made no logical sense, it all created an atmosphere where you know you aren't welcome and that Mundus' influence affected even every little grain of sand on the island.

I loved every boss fight that wasn't Mundus, though Griffon would have functioned better if Aerial Rave existed and Nightmare was a little fiddly at times. The highlight by far were the Nelo Angelo fights. The way Ultra Violet starts playing as he stands on top of a rooftop, the way he responded to attacks, his slowly evolving fighting style and his deep imposing laughter, it all clicked.

Every area was recognisable and interesting. The way objectives were designed around elaborate objects made getting lost unlikely.

The general flow of combat was very good. I originally really missed Aerial Rave but much of the fight worked well grounded. I found Alastor the most fun. Flurry and stinger are classics but the DT's enhanced speed and flight capabilities made for interesting combat decisions. Ifrit I was originally displeased with as brawling weapons aren't my favourites, but it won me over a little when it could smack around enemies that blocked Alastor swings and then later blew me away with it's rapid fire kicks and fireballs.

Maybe the most precious gift of all however was how it added context to 5. So many things in 5 are now obvious callbacks. Sin Devil Trigger feels like a combination of Alastor DT and Sparda DT. Dante using Sparda in 5 looked like he was just using a replacement for Rebellion since I never saw it before but now with the knowledge of how it was used yet again to unlock another form of DT with very similar sword moves as in that Mundus fight. I also find it very cute that Dante just gave away his strongest source of power to Trish after he didn't need it anymore and wouldn't take it back until 5. Then there's the similarities between different Angelos, Nero's fighting style and the Nelo Angelo.

Now for the bad parts. I purposefully left this as the last thing since I don't want anyone to walk away thinking that I am a hater or that any of these take away from how awesome the awesome parts of the game were.

The worst part was the dialogue. I was expecting something a bit more legendary. A lot of information given is fundamentally vital to later games and my main reason to play the game was to experience all the things I had heard from others and from wiki articles. Instead what I got was very awkward expository dialogue. Almost every scene with Dante and Trish was horrible. The horrible acting didn't exactly help either. I still have no idea who Trish is, why she was even evil or turned good except I guess she was happy to have been saved. Is she just meant to be eye candy?. Dante isn't much better and is basically only saved because there's 5 games highlighting his personality and his taunts at the demons felt very Dante. All this is partly excused with all the nonverbal story telling however. I can only hope 3 does a better job at this.

Mundus was a very bad boss. Don't make me choose between Inverted analog and non-inverted Dpad, hold two face buttons uncomfortably to fly fast while shooting and subject me to a long fight with unfamiliar controls and no way to regain health and then have the audacity to have a round two that is a more obscure and less fluid version of 4's Saviour fight without even giving me a health refill. In the same breath I will mention the underwater combat. In both scenarios a new fighting system is used that probably took 5 minutes to program.
