What If Dante (Devil May Cry) was in Smash Bros (What if #12)

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 11:48 AM PST

Dante, the demon slayer for hire that is the son of sparda, he has appeared in a great series of games and..... not so great looks... (DmC: Devil May Cry, i'm looking directly at you) and even crossover fighting games like the marvel vs capcom series and playstation all star battle royale.... but one i am surprised he isn't in... Super Smash Bros. which is weird since we got capcom's mascots and ken, so why not dante? well.... I'm here to make a moveset for Dante... now dante would be a neutral weight fighter, he'd be able to double jump and would be able to wall jump. and just for visual effect, whenever dante double jumps, a glyph would appear for him to jump off of, similar to the games.

    The Basic Stuff

Dante's stage entrance would have him jump onto the stage, similar to terry's... this is cause i couldn't think of any good stage entrance for him..... Dante's idle would have Dante stand there with rebellion on his back, his first idle animation would have Dante put his hands on his hips, turn away to look behind him, and express his discontent with the lack of action, one of his idle animations from Devil may cry 4. and for his second idle animation, Dante would stretch, scratch his face, and then cross his arms, a reference to Dante's second idle animation from Devil may cry 4. Dante's walking animation would match that of his run from Devil may cry 4 as well. (his walk) same with that of his running animation (Dante's run in DMC4) Dante's shielding animation would have him use do a similar pose to royal guard, and shielding will be important to dante, you'll find out why when we get to his gimmick later.

    The Neutral Attacks

Dante's three jab combo is able to go into a rapid jab, Dante's normal jab would be the Rebellion Combo A from Devil May Cry 5, A downward slash, followed by an upward slash and then another downward slash, but if you want the rapid jab, the last downward slash would be replaced by the end of the Rebellion Combo B from DMC 5, which is quick rapid stabs ending with a big stab. His Dash attack would be Stinger, Dante would jump forward with rebellion out and when he lands, he thrusts his blade forward. Dante's forward tilt would have him use balrog (devil arm) and preform Heavy Jolt + Fly Dragon, doing short distance lunge punch into an uppercut. Dante's down tile would have him shoot the ground in front of him. Dante's up tilt would have him preform prop, Dante would hold his sword in the air and spin it around multiple times, this move would rapidly damage caught foes before sending them upwards. Dante's forward smash would have him keeping it stylish! Dante would use both of his gun to shoot a small space in front of him before ending it with a powerful duel shot and with Dante saying "Jackpot" this move is a reference to his hyper from MVC3 called "Million Dollars" Dante's up smash would have him use Ifrit and preform Magma Drive, preforming an uppercut, followed by a pillar of fire rising behind him. Dante's Down smash would be something that looks identical to one of his moves in the marvel vs capcom series, specifically, Million Carats. Dante would pull out Cerberus and smash Cerberus down on the ground to erupt an ice prison around himself. this move would launch foes into the air and has a chance to freeze opponents. Dante's Neutral air is Aerial Rave, Dante would pull out Rebellion and slash 4 times in the air, he will remain still in the air the first time he uses it. Dante's forward air would have him use the feather combo, Dante would use balrog to punch two times in front of him before ending it with a spiking punch downward, the end of this move would spike. Dante's back air would be a backwards variation of Sky Dance, Dante would pull out Agni and Rudra while turning around and do two quick slashes. Dante's Down Air would be Rain Storm. Dante would use Ebony and Ivory and fire a hailstorm downward while spinning in the air while yelling "YAHOOO!" Dante's up air would be swing, Dante would pull out cerberus and swing upwards, this move would also have a chance to freeze opponents.

    The Grabs

Dante would grab with one hand and pummel the opponent with the back of his sword, his forward throw would have him preform the ending part of million stab, instead of lunging forward, he'd just do the rapid stabs. Dante's up throw would have him preform high time, where he slashes upward with his sword, sending the foe upward, this can be chained with any of his aerials. Dante's down throw would have him slam his opponent onto the ground, putting his foot on them and shooting the foe 5 times. Dante's back throw would once again use balrog to preform Welter Move and Bantam Revenge, Dante would get into a boxing stance and move around the opponent, hitting them as he moves around them, and doing a heavy blow into their back to send them flying, this throw would turn dante around.

    The Specials

For Dante's Neutral Special, he'd preform Drive. a move where Dante would hold his sword behind his back as it glows... this is a chargeable move, there are four levels of this move, a weak variant where dante would send out a small weak sword beam, a medium damage variant where dante would send out a decently sized sword beam out, a large damage variant where Dante would send out a beam slash that is taller than dante, and the fourth level charge would switch the move to Over Drive, If you keep holding down the b button as dante reached level 3 charge, the sword will glow and the move would automatically be released, dante would send out the same beam slash as the level 3 variant but follow it up with two more. Dante's side special would be Dark Slayer (Yamato Combo S) The Yamato (the sword vergil uses) would appear in dante's left hand as he assumes an iai (quickdraw) stance, the sheath gleaming when the attack is about to execute, Dante would then teleport in the direction the control stick is held, before unsheathing the yamato and performing a powerful slash, he then would sheath it and the sword disappearing in blue flames. Dante's up special would have him use dash in the direction he is facing, if he uses this in the air, he would use sky star. Dante's down special ties into his gimmick, Dante's down special is Devil Trigger. above Dante's damage percentage would be a bar. the bar can be filled by landing blows, parrying and blocking perfectly, taunting successfully, and taking devastating blows, up to ten notches. once he has 3 notches on the bar, he can access his demonic form, which lasts as long as he has energy, specific moves use devil trigger energy, and while in devil trigger, some moves gain special perks, (for example, drive would automatically go to level 3 and the over drive variant doesn't take as long to reach) also, dante would gain super armor for some of his moves... dante would also slowly regenerate health... specifically, 5% per notch.

The Final Smash (Spoiler for if you haven't played DMC 5 yet... so skip it if you haven't)

Dante's final smash would have him unleash the full power of his sin devil trigger with Judgement, where he would unleash Armageddon with a series of attacks that finish with a huge explosion of demonic energy, expending all of it, resulting in Dante reverting back to his human form and fall back to earth.

    The Other Stuff

    The Alternate Colors

Dante's first outfit gives him a light blue jacket and dark blue pants, this outfit references his brother, vergil.

Dante's second outfit turns his outfit completely black while turning his hair blonde, a reference to trish.

Dante's third outfit turns his jacket white and his hair brown, a reference to lady.

Dante's fourth outfit turns his jacket a dark blue and turns his hair a deeper shade of grey, a reference to nero.

Dante's fifth outfit turns his jacket purple, based off dante's father, Sparda

Dante's sixth outfit turns his jacket green, based off gilver.

and finally, Dante's final outfit turns his eyes red and his whole outfit and body black, kind of the dark link version of dante, this outfit is based off of Doppelganger, a boss from devil may cry 3.

Dante's first victory animation would have the camera pan down to show dante in a sexy pose while eating pizza.

Dante's second victory animation would have the camera go down to dante as he is unloading shots, then he puts his hand in his pocket and strike a pose similar to his devil may cry artwork, he then says "Show's over"

Dante's final victory animation would have Dante spin around and motion goodbye while walking away just like during the end of DMC 4.

Dante's first taunt would have him beckon the foe for a fight and saying "C'mon" (Visual)

Dante's second taunt would have him shrug and say "Hey, what's up?" (Visual)

Dante's final taunt would have him wave his opponent away in disappointment, saying "Get outta here" (Visual)

and that is it for Dante's moveset, now i hope you all have enjoyed this and for the next moveset...... it's reimu, i already said this but i had to push her moveset back to the 13th fighter....

I feel like the devil breaker system implemented for nero was the perfect complement to the character.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 08:23 AM PST

Nero is, in a lot of ways, like a reverse dante, his moveset is rigid, he only uses one sword, his gun is designed to hit like a truck and even adds explosive damage, and most of his flexibility in dmc4 came from his phantom trigger and dodge abilities. To put it simply, nero wasn't overly complicated or complex, he was easy to use but he simply didn't have a style system. his devil bringer was more of a "press circle to fuck shit up and use enemies like projectiles/weapons during the duration of the buster animation"

The breaker system was the perfect solution to nero's lack of a style system, and it also fit with his main focus of being the "anti-dante character".

Nero's defining trait is his simplicity in combat, his attacks are thuggish, brutish, he swings wide and hard, his sword literally revs up so he can do more damage without sacrificing the lack of complexity, as he simply supercharges and speeds up already powerful attacks, his gun isn't complicated and just hits really hard, he's easy to get into, but lacked elements that made him on par with dante, leading a lot of people to just view him as a "poor man's dante"

In dmc5 the breaker system basically gave nero a massive variety of styles, but also made them disposable, meaning if you wanted to add complexity to the character, there was a rigid limitation. nero wasn't meant to be played like dante, he was meant to be played as a straightforward character who fought in a straightforward fashion. he was the alex to dante's ryu, due in large part to his grappler nature, but with the focus being on keeping him uncomplicated came the need to make the thing that made him complex remain in keeping with that idea.

the breakers basically gave nero a MASSIVE amount of options, you could freely pick and choose how to augment his approach in combat and even deliberately sacrifice the arms for more damage either through detonation or a superpowered attack. Wanna put a boss in knockdown? punchline's got your back. wanna stop time? ragtime, the balanced quicksilver. and again, all of these kickass abilities nero got came with the added drawback of being a resource you spent if you played poorly or used their most broken abilities. this is largely why i think the breaker system works for nero so well. he's not a complex character, so in order to make him better they added strictly optional, largely temporary "taste tests" of complexity that only served to enhance what he already had available. ever want to use nero's sword at max power? There's an arm for that. Wanna just do a lot of damage and create easy knockdowns? there's an arm for that. wanna crowd control a single minor enemy while you focus on the big one? there's an arm for that too. every one of nero's breakers are best employed for a specific situation and each one helps overcome a major flaw in his combat, but only individually, ragtime removes the need to worry about charging up maximum bet, overture's sticky bombs are a solution for when you don't wanna charge the gun as much and just wanna deal lots of damage. gerbera is added mobility that has no set limit and acts as both a dodge, and a stylish juggle/enemy carry. and so on, the breakers all cover one flaw in nero's moveset but only if you're already decent at playing nero. since he remains largely unchanged from 4, this isn't a problem.

5 nero's devil breakers are the perfect upgrade for him, they're expendable so you don't unbalance the game, and the breakers cover his weaknesses while adding a similar complexity to dante's style system without actually giving the same freedom as dante's style system, adding a restriction to a character who is defined by his restrictive moveset. sure it might not feel in the spirit of devil may cry to say that, but nero's solid enough as he is, the breaker system basically completes him in a way that i doubt the original phantom trigger ever could, and i think they did an amazing job because it fits him perfectly.
