    What do you think would have happened if Vergil and Dante had been in different positions when they lost their mother?

    My take is this. Disclaimer - I'm a newer fan so I may have some info about the characters and their personalities wrong. Feel free to correct me.

    I have always interpreted it as Vergil thinking that his mother abandoned him, based on lines from DMC5. Because of that, he does not care much about the well-being of others because others did not care about him. So if he knew that his mother had tried to save him while Eva went after Dante next, according to my headcanon he does not turn out to be as power-hungry and uncaring. Vergil grows up, and while he is still very serious, without too much of a sense of humor, he is also a much kinder, more caring man in this timeline. He marries Nero's mother, is a supportive, available and loving father to Nero himself, and lives happily on Fortuna with them. Similar to Dante in the main timeline, he makes efforts to protect humanity from threats, and often allies with the Order of the Sword, having saved them from corruption. Vergil's good deeds gained him a good reputation and made him a beloved figure in Fortuna. For a while, Vergil does not know if Dante survived the attack, and often worries about his well-being.

    Dante, on the other hand, believes that even though his mother abandoned him, the demons responsible for attacking their home had committed the greater of the two evils and becomes bent on destroying the attackers. However, his belief that his mother did not attempt to save him makes him lose a great deal faith in humanity, and he stops caring about the well-beings of others around him, doing whatever it takes to find information about his mother's killers. But although he does not know Vergil's status immediately, he still holds out some hope that Vergil is out there, and does not hold his mother's fate against him. He masks his emotions with rambunctious, flippant and seemingly immature behavior much more callous than his mainline counterpart. Rather than an outright evil person, he is something of a misguided anti-villain.

    One day, Dante is given misinformation that the Order of the Sword in Fortuna had some responsibility in his mother and brother's death, and he travels to Fortuna with the intent to kill many members of the Order at night before confronting their leader to make him confess the Order's part in the attack. But the day he arrives, he visits a pub where someone is talking about how the local hero, a guy called Vergil, saved the day once again. Realizing that his brother is still alive and that these people are talking about him, Dante presses the individual and his friends for more information about this hero they are talking about. Once the guy has said all he knows, Dante spends the rest of the day asking people around the town about Vergil, the city's legendary hero, learning about how his brother has been living there with a wife and young son. But something a particular townsperson said gets his attention: "Vergil often talks about his brother. He wishes every day that his brother was still alive and he could meet him again." Realizing that Vergil has been thinking about him and his well being, Dante starts to have a change of heart. He gives up the idea of unnecessarily killing Holy Knights, and decides to find a different way to get Vergil's attention. So starts Alternate Timeline Dante's road to redemption!

    That's my take on what would happen if Dante and Vergil were in different positions that day. What is yours?
