A DMC 5 Appreciation Post - What I Loved and What I Would Change Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:20 AM PDT While I am not a hardcore DMC fan (DMC 4 and DmC were the only other games that I was able to play, so far), I dug deep into the previous installments and, after some research, I feel like I am finally ready to give my insight about DMC 5. In sum, it's a fantastic game. Sure, it has flaws (most of them are more like nitpicks, though), but after many years, Capcom was able to deliver a triumph in both storytelling and gameplay. STORY ( + ) - Performances and cinematography were fantastic and the best the saga has ever seen. RE Engine is one hell of a beast and allowed for some great photorealism and faithful facial expressions. These are aspects that certainly elevate any video game story;
- The use of three main characters was a success. When a story deals with timelines, it risks being confusing and convoluted, but I thought DMC 5 did a great job in keeping everything clear for the players - I never felt confused about what was happening and that's a good thing;
- V worked really well and provided depth to the story. He becomes increasingly memorable the more you try to deconstruct his character. He is neither "good" or "evil", being simply a human that wants to exist. He wants Urizen to fail but he doesn't want him do die (that would mean his death as well). In my honest opinion, it was a really honest and decent way of portraying the human nature and its complexity - which is further helped by V's familiar, who end up being transition concepts between Human and Demon ("thoughts given life");
- The Urizen conflict was handled exceptionally well. Any game with an inferior and less ambitious story would struggle to avoid fatigue and repetition, but in this case, it served to highlight Urizen's sheer power and our heroes' small steps to dethrone and eventually defeat him. Of course, I would still change some things, but those would be more like "personal vision" instead of real flaws. Devil May Cry heroes are supposed to be fearless and badass warriors, but they still need a good ass-kicking from time to time (otherwise, they would be too much like a certain bald anime character...);
- For me, the true highlight was the "passing on the torch" component. During half of the game, Nero divided the spotlight with V but still managed to steal the show, in my opinion. Once Dante entered the picture, his iconic charisma, fantastic combat and evident personal connection to Urizen mande him the spotlight... and that's okay! It was only natural, because Dante WAS Devil May Cry (not to understate the other characters, but it's true). When compared to Dante, Nero is the underdog, but he pressed on and, by the of the game, he proved himself to be an interesting and cohesive character with a good heart and a tremendous amount of power (which is still a "diamond in the rough"). When Dante says that "It's because you're here that we can go", you really don't need to hear anything else;
- I truly loved Nico. Her character had the right amount of importance and screen time, with expectations of a role expansion somewhere down the line. Her dynamic with Nero was cool and, at times, heartwarming. I definitely want to see more of Nicoletta Goldstein, in the future.
( - ) - Some characters were not as well utilized as they could have. I expected more of Lady, Trish and Morrison - the fact that you don't get to experience at least one battle with Dante, Lady and Trish against whatever horde or boss is particularly disappointing. I think Morrison could have been connected to some kind of movement to help the survivors of Red City Grave (when the military inevitably fell) and you could witness his role in sporadic moments of civilians in danger, as Nero or Dante would "go out of your way" to help them defend a haven from being overrun with demons;
- The scenarios that we visit needed a bit more "personality" and uniqueness, a bit like Nero's early stages. The Qliphoth suffers with this absence of structure and novelty, in particular... I get that it is just a tree and it didn't necessarily need to be more complex than it was, but I think that it could have been portrayed as a condensed, semi-open system that would organically explain a lot of the colony dynamics and life cycle - for example, explaining if Empusas are humans transformed by some kind of Qliphoth process or something else entirely;
- Even though some of the enemies are genuinely "creepy", I think the story could have led us into some pretty macabre locations, as a homage to the early games. For example, the graveyard could have been better explored and later Qliphoth sections could have been a bit more oppressive, as it "fought back" against its imminet destruction.
GAMEPLAY ( + ) - Three main characters equals three distinct and nuanced combat styles, making for a more varied experience. In my opinion, Dante was the star of the show, followed by Nero and V;
- Lesser demons were plentiful, varied and nuanced - I loved how you had to find ways to prevent Hell Antenoras from getting pumped up, adjust to Nobodies' liberal use of different masks and how an apparently tanky enemy like the Death Scissors can be trivialized with the right tactics;
- Boss fights were cool and arrived at a farily steady pace. Goliath is one of the highlights, with Ultimate Urizen, King Cerberus and Vergil being absolutely fantastic. Epic bosses are part of DMC's charm and the latest installment truly delivered;
- Secret Missions made an expected but awesome comeback. In fact, I loved them so much that I even wanted them to be more plentiful (15, 18, 20... whatever ahaha). They offered yet another fitting reward for exploration;
- The game is one of the most accessible DMC titles out there. Aim Assist seems to be a helpful tool to help casual players achieve better style in a first playthrough (even if it was feature that I did not use, I appreciate its inclusion) and there have been a couple of quality-of-life tweaks to the combat formula that felt necessary.
( - ) - While V was certainly interesting story-wise, his combat is a bit divisive... It's captivating and fun, but it can get stale if you are playing as him in longer bursts (I predict that it may be problematic in Bloody Palace). V's combat stye could have benefitted from an extra familiar or certain demonic augmentations to the already established ones. These augmentations could change their skills and, to a certain extent, stats, thus allowing for a more diverse and involved playstyle. I also think that V's cane could have some basic combos that would cause very low damage with decent stun potential, just to help the man feel more involved in the fight, from time to time.
- If Nero could switch freely between Devil Breakers, it would be a game-changer. Just imagine the tactical possibilities in terms of combos! On the other hand, the combat feels a bit more "grounded" and the choice of loadout ends up being more impactful, so it's a matter of preference;
- In DMC 5, not every battle is fought in "arena style" (sometimes, there's small scale encounters too). I think the game could have benefitted from several "gimmick battles" like the one in the escalator during the subway stage. They would force the player to improvise for a bit. Additionally, I would have loved to see more of Nero's Devil Breakers being used to interact with the environment: for example, we have Punch Line that can help us ascend ramps and jump though them, but Overture could have been used to electrify certain floors/panels to serve as environmental hazards or open certain paths;
- Some input choices seems awkward and you can't work around some of them. For example, you can (and should) definitely change "Blue Rose" button to something more practical and "Red Queen friendly", but you can't do anything about the messy shift between Balrog's two combat modes;
- The game needed a couple more quick, organic and active puzzles (like the one with the Blood Statue, but more involved).

[DMC5] Is heaven and hell/hell and hell unlocked after SOS or DMD? Also how is Vergil’s Ex-color outfit unlocked? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:25 AM PDT I'm currently playing through SOS and was wondering when I unlock heaven and hell/hell and hell. I've heard some people say that you only unlock it after playing DMD and others say you unlock all 3 modes once you finish SOS. So which one is it? Also, how do you unlock Vergil's Ex-color? Can you get it by completing DMD? submitted by /u/aureusxx [link] [comments] |
